Its valepotriates and valerenic acid components appear to affect the brains neurotransmitter receptor sites known as GABA receptors. GABA is a naturally occurring amino acid that scientists think is responsible for anxiety. Valerian is thought to bind the GABA receptor sites, thus promoting relaxation and sedation. Valerian thus promotes a sense of calmness, and enhances our ability to experience restful sleep.
