Compounded Therapy for Pain Management

Chronic pain is associated with a number of medical conditions including arthritis, fibromyalgia, migraine, headaches, and nerve and muscle pain. The cause of chronic pain is often complex and multi-faceted, making it more difficult to manage than short-term acute pain.

Compounded prescription therapy offers an individualized, multidisciplinary approach with a variety of options that can be far more beneficial than standard brand treatment in managing chronic pain. Customized treatment protocols not only offer pain relief, but may also limit or avoid the serious side-effects often associated with conventional pain medications.

Dosage Forms

Compounded medications can deliver the ingredients of traditional oral pain medications in a variety of dosage strengths and forms. Hard to find or specialty ingredients and flavors that make the medication more palatable over a long period of time can be included in the custom formula. Preservatives, dyes and fillers can be avoided. Dosage forms to choose from include:

  • Immediate Release Capsules and Tablets Standard capsules and tablets are available.
  • Sustained Release Capsules Regular medication can be transformed into a time-released formulation for longer pain relief.
  • Sublingual tablets Flavored sublingual tablets bypass the stomach and liver.
  • Topical transdermal creams, gels and ointments Topical gels, creams and ointments can offer increased effectiveness and decreased side-effects.
  • Suppositories Medications can be easily administered rectally and vaginally.
  • Nasal Sprays Medicated nasal sprays provide another excellent option for administering many pain medications.
  • Rinses/Mouthwashes Antibiotics, antihistamines, and pain relievers can be combined to provide relief of oral pain.
