Definition of Osteoporosis

E-mail

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by exaggerated loss of bone mass and changes in microarchitecture of the bone tissue that compromise bone quality. Bones become fragile and prone to fracture. Either a bone mineral density (BMD) measurement of > 2.5 standard deviations (SD) below the young normal mean or a previous fragility fracture is accepted as the definition of osteoporosis from a clinical perspective.

Although Osteoporosis primarily affects postmenopausal women because hormonal changes accelerate bone resorption, it is not bound by age or gender.
