What Is Hysterectomy?

E-mail

By definition, hysterectomy is a surgery that removes the uterus and cervix. The ovaries and fallopian tubes may or may not be removed. An accurate diagnosis is essential to the successful outcome of a hysterectomy. If symptoms are not accurately diagnosed, a hysterectomy may not provide symptom relief.

Whether to have a hysterectomy is a complex decision, especially for women still in their child-bearing years. If a hysterectomy has been recommended by your health care provider, it is important to weigh the short-term benefits against the risks and costs. Learn about the type of hysterectomy surgery suggested, possible complications, and steps for recovery.

After hysterectomy, hormone levels can change dramatically, so it is important to also learn about saliva hormone testing, and natural hormone replacement therapy.
